PUNAKAWAN
Punakawan is very famous puppets in every Javanese puppets stories . They are Semar, Gareng, Petruk and Bagong. Semar is the father of Gareng (oldest son), Petruk, and Bagong (youngest son).
In every puppets shadow performance, many people always wait them. Because, they are funny.
Punakawan are symbols for many character. May be in several Javanese puppets story punakawan have different character. Simpely, the punakawan figures themselves vary from place to place, from narrator and puppeteers to narrator and puppeteer of traditional shadow performance. So, sometimes they are:
- as servant of the king.
- as masses, common people.
- as king.
- as hero, make a solve of the complicate problem.
- as teacher that know everything.
- as God.
- as the other people that not include on the story, etc.
Semar is a character in Javanese mythology that frequently appears in puppet shadow plays. He is in fact the most powerful of all Gods in the puppet genre and on occasions Batara Guru (the Hindu god Siva) has to submit to him. Semar is portrayed as being immensely fat, with heavy breasts and an enormous derriere. He is decorated like a woman but dressed as a man which gives him an ambiguous identity, heightening the mystical quality of his character. He is the dhanyang (guardian spirit) of Java, and is regarded by some as the most sacred figure of the wayang set. He is said to be the god Sang Hyang Ismaya in human form.
In many stories of shadow puppets, Semar always become key person who solve the problem. He do very simple life.
The other names of Semar are Ki Lurah Semar, Ki Semar Badranaya, Kyai Ismaya, Nayantaka, Saronsari, Janggan Asmarasanta, Bogajati and Wong Boga Sampir.
Gareng is the elder son of Semar. He is a deformed dwarf with crooked and disjointed arms, and has yaw sores on his feet. He specialises in puns and sly insinuations.
The other names of Gareng are Pancalpamor, Pegatwaja and Nala Gareng. Gareng means garing (Java) or dry.
The phylosophie of Gareng say that his heart is 'dry' from bad attitude.
Petruk, the second son of Semar, is easily recognised by his tall and scrawny build. He has a large, predatory mouth and a long nose. He provides constant laughter with his practical jokes and comic horseplay.
The other names of Petruk are Doblajaya and Kanthong Bolong.
Bagong is the youngest son of Semar. Bagong. He is a very fat man with a big belly and enormous buttocks, so he can sit comfortably
